Police Academy Magnet
Overview

The Dorsey High School Police Academy Magnet School Program offers a rigorous high school curriculum developed for young men and women expressing an interest in a career in law enforcement and other related areas of law enforcement. The program provides a better understanding of law enforcement for students and also provides a high quality recruiting resource for the Los Angeles Police Department. Upon graduation from Dorsey High School Police Academy cadets can be prepared to enter a four year university, or other schools of higher education to further their career aspirations.

The Police Academy Magnet School Program curriculum goes beyond the basic high school course requirements, providing students with specialized coursework, training, mentoring, work and volunteer opportunities. The program includes:
  • Communication skills, with emphasis on listening, reading, speaking, writing and thinking as it relates to law enforcement.
  • Basic concepts of criminal law, principles of law enforcement, constitutional law, the criminal justice system and other law related topics.
  • Health training, including mental and physical health.
  • The role of science and technology in solving crimes.
  • A Police Academy COMPUTER LAB using programs which relate to law enforcement.
  • Community service, to develop good citizenship and ongoing community involvement.
Curriculum

The foundation of the Police Academy Magnet curriculum is the course requirements of the LAUSD, and the completion of the "A to G" requirements of the University of California. Because of the variety of financial, emotional and family problems faced by many students, special emphasis is placed on working one-on-one with individual students; assessing their educational needs, building their self-esteem and helping them reach their full potential. The curriculum specific to the Police Academy Magnet enriches the basic course requirements and presents the students with thematic course work: introducing students to the world of law enforcement through education, training, work, volunteering and mentoring.

Physical Training & Mentoring

Of special interest is the physical training aspect of the program. The LAUSD program has established an early conditioning program with a state of the art weight room and with a challenging obstacle course training program. The cadets develop a high level of physical fitness including strength development and cardiovascular endurance to prepare them for a physically demanding career in law enforcement.

An added asset to the program is LAPD Police Officer Coleman, assigned, full time, to our school site. The officer presents classroom experiences from law enforcement to both teach and mentor the cadets.

Dress / Grooming Code

Cadets are required to wear Police Academy provided uniforms including polo shirts, jackets, sweats, running gear, and dress blues on a regular basis allowing the cadets to develop a sense of community and pride. Shorter hair, weekly inspections and drills conducted by LAPD Officers and student leaders are important components in a program that rewards excellence in academic pursuits, physical fitness, conduct, and community service.

Magnet Classes

The Magnet guidelines require students to be enrolled in a minimum of three magnet classes. The Physical Fitness class is required EVERY year.

Facilities

Roll Call Room and Computer Lab: A fully networked, on-line lab containing 20 Gateway computers and 2 laser printers as well as Microsoft Office XP professional.

Weight Room: An up-to-date work out room equipped with the latest weight training equipment.

Obstacle Course: A challenging facility built to help meet the standards of the LAPD Academy and to promote strength and agility.
